President David Leebron called to order and chaired the General Faculty Meeting in McMurtry Auditorium of Duncan Hall at 10:05 a.m. Alan Chapman served as Parliamentarian.

1. Minutes of 3-16-05 Faculty Meeting - On motion duly made and seconded, the minutes of the March l6, 2005 Faculty Meeting were APPROVED as circulated in advance on the web.

2. Approval of candidates for undergraduate degrees - President Leebron called on Deborah Nelson-Campbell, chair of the Committee on Examinations and Standings (EX&S), to present the list of candidates for Baccalaureate Degrees. Three corrections needed in the handout were noted by Registrar David Tenney. Nelson-Campbell relayed there were no exceptions.

President Leebron moved to approve the list of candidates for Baccalaureate degrees as circulated in advance of the meeting, with corrections noted, by Registrar Tenney.

A vote was taken, and the faculty APPROVED that the 664 degrees be awarded. The list of names and associated departments is attached to the file copy of these minutes.

3. Approval of undergraduate honors - President Leebron called on Nelson to present for faculty approval the list of students qualifying for University Honors. The list is summarized below:

Summa cum laude - 38
Magna cum laude - 65
Cum laude - 100

By unanimous vote, the faculty APPROVED for honors 203 candidates. The list of names is attached to the file copy of these minutes.

4. Approval of candidates for advanced degrees -President Leebron called on Clarence Miller, chair of the Graduate Council, to present the official list of candidates for Advanced Degrees. Miller pointed out a typo in the handout and also stated that a late change resulted in the need to remove one name from the handout provided by Registrar's office. There were no other exceptions. Several other necessary corrections were pointed out by faculty. The list of those recommended for graduate degrees, as distributed to all attendees prior to the meeting, is attached to the file copy of these minutes.

5. Faculty Council's year-end report - Speaker Lynne Huffer presented a brief summary of Faculty Council's work and accomplishments this year covering the following topics::

9. Announcements

President Leebron announced names of faculty members who passed away this academic year:

Elizabeth Dietz, Assistant Professor in English, passed away suddenly on April 20, 2005.

Bill Mackey passed away in November, 2004. He retired in 1984 and returned to Rice as an adjunct professor in the Jones School for one year in 1996.

Bill Wilson made a few comments regarding the 92nd Commencement ceremony.

President Leebron commented on the quality work being done at Rice and the quality of his Rice colleagues. An overview of faculty accomplishments during 2004-05, as reported by the respective deans, may be found on the President's Office web site at: http://www.professor.rice.edu/professor/Office_of_the_President.asp.

President Leebron then gave brief remarks on his busy first year at Rice and future plans. He also alerted faculty to a draft document currently being circulated, entitled "A Call to Conversation", an engagement with Rice communities about necessary priorities and a vision for Rice's future. This draft document will be made available to all faculty during the summer, via electronic means, for comments.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:50.
