President Malcolm Gillis called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. in McMurtry Auditorium of Duncan Hall. Alan Chapman served as Parliamentarian. Guests Matt Haynie, Student Association President, and Mark Berenson, News Editor of the Rice Thresher, were acknowledged as present.

1. Approval of Minutes - On motion duly made and seconded, the Minutes of the March 27, 2002 meeting were APPROVED unanimously as circulated in advance on the web.

2. Approval of Candidates for Undergraduate Degrees - President Gillis called on Dan Osherson, chair of the Committee on Examinations and Standings (EX&S), to present the list of candidates for Baccalaureate Degrees. Registrar Jerry Montag explained one exception. Osherson relayed the EX&S Committee's recommendation to accept this exception. The faculty approved the exception and accepted the list of candidates. Prior to the meeting, EX&S distributed lists containing names of 680 candidates for Bachelors Degrees in the following categories:

By unanimous vote, the faculty APPROVED that all 680 degrees be awarded. The list of names and associated departments are shown in ATTACHMENT A.

3. Approval of Undergraduate Honors - Once again President Gillis called on Osherson to present for faculty approval the list of students qualifying for University Honors. The list is summarized below:

Summa cum laude - 39
Magna cum laude - 70
Cum laude - 105

Again by unanimous vote, the faculty APPROVED for honors the 214 candidates listed in ATTACHMENT B. President Gillis requested that the names of honorees be kept confidential until they appear publicly at Commencement on Saturday morning.

4. Approval of Candidates for Advanced Degrees -President Gillis called on Kate Beckingham, chair of the Graduate Council, to present the official list of candidates for Advanced Degrees. The list had also been previously distributed to all attendees and is summarized in the following categories:

There being no "exceptions" to the degree requirements, once more the faculty unanimously APPROVED the 400 Advanced Degree candidates (see ATTACHMENT C).

President Gillis noted that these numbers did not include the January degrees. Speaker Bob Patten requested that the minutes record cumulative degrees. Montag provided the cumulative numbers. In May, 680 undergraduate students are graduating; in January, 81 undergraduate students received degrees, for a cumulative total of 761 undergraduate degrees for the academic year. Also in May, 400 graduate students will receive degrees, plus 98 January graduate students for a total of 498 graduate student degrees for the academic year. The total for this year's graduation is 1259 students as compared to 1231 students last year.

5. Faculty Awards: Teaching Awards and Outstanding Faculty Associates -President Gillis presented the following awards to 23 outstanding faculty. In most cases, the awards consisted of a plaque and a check.

6. Overview of Faculty Accomplishments - The respective deans have reported the following accomplishments by faculty in their Schools.

A. ARCHITECTURE: John Casbarian, Associate Dean, and Danny Samuels, Visiting Smith Professor (both principals of Taft Architects) are the joint recipients of a Texas Society of Architecture Honor Award. William T. Cannady, Professor, Nonya Grenader, Lecturer, Gordon Wittenberg, Professor each received the Houston American Institute of Architects' Award.

B. GEORGE R. BROWN SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING: Ken Kennedy, John Doerr Professor of Computer Science and Director of HiPerSoft, was appointed University Professor. He recently published a book (with Randy Allen), Optimizing Compilers for Modern Architectures. This book represents 20 years of teaching and research by Ken and his colleagues, all done at Rice on a very important problem. Ken also received the Rice Distinguished Alumni Award. Richard Tapia, Noah Harding Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics, was honored with the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Symposium, Association for Computing Machinery and IEEE-Computer Society. Matteo Pasquali, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, received the NSF CAREER Award. Moshe Vardi, George Professor of Computer Science and Director of C.I.T.I. was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, and a Symposium on Effectiveness of Logic in Computer Science was held in his honor. He also received an Honorary Doctoral Degree from Saarland University, in Saarbruecken, Germany. Naomi Halas, Stanley C. Moore Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Junichiro Kono, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received an NSF CAREER Award. Javier Rojo, Professor of Statistics, was elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

C. HUMANITIES: In the past 15 months, Humanities faculty have published 29 books. Currently 10 members of the school are president-elect, president, or past-president of their professional scholarly organizations. Baruch Brody, Philosophy, was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the Academies of Science. He is one of the very few scholars in the Institute who do not have an MD. He and others also received a grant of $1,000,000 from the Ford Foundation for a three-year project entitled "Altering Nature: How Religious Traditions Assess the New Biotechnologies. Alex Byrd, History, will spend the next year as a fellow at the Cullom Davis Center at Princeton , where he will be working on a book entitled Black Captives, Black Voyagers. He was also awarded an ACLS/Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Junior Faculty and a Huntington Library Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Coulter George, Lecturer in Classics, and a 1997 Rice graduate, won an extremely competitive four-year Research Fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge. Carol Quillen, History, has accepted an invitation from the Harvard Center for the Study of the Italian Renaissance in Florence to spend a year there writing a book entitled Writing the Human in Early Modern Europe. She also received an invitation to be a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, which she had to turn down. Paula Sanders, History, was awarded an NEH research grant that will support her while she works on the imagined construction of a medieval Cairoi in the 19th and 20th century. She will use this award as a fellow at the National Humanities Center at the Research Triangle in North Carolina for the academic year 2002-03. She also spurned an American Philosophical Society grant in favor of her other grants. Susan Wood, English, received the 2002 Best Book of Poetry Award from the Texas Institute of Letters for her book, Asunder.

D. JONES GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT: Richard Bagozzi received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, in October 2001. He also received the Best Article of the Year Award, awarded annually for the best paper published in the Korean Journal of Marketing. Jeff Fleming and Barbara Ostdiek were finalists for the Smith-Breeden Prize, awarded annually by the American Finance Association for the best paper published in the Journal of Finance. Jennifer George received the Best Paper Award, awarded annually for the best paper published in Human Relations. Yan Anthea Zhang was awarded the Best Reviewer, awarded annually for the best reviewer serving the Academy of Management scholarly journals, Business and Policy Studies Division. Stephen Zeff received the Hourglass Award, presented annually by the Academy of Accounting Historians for the best work in the field.

F. SHEPHERD SCHOOL OF MUSIC: Shi-Hui Chen, Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory, was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for 2001-02, a Barlow Foundation for the Arts Award, and a residency at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, Italy. She had world premieres of her music in Boston and Seattle and performances in various places including Shanghai. Arthur Gottschalk, Professor of Composition and Theory and Kenneth Goldsmith, Professor of Violin, performed Gottschalk's violin concerto, "Fantasy Variations" with Kenneth Goldsmith as soloist, at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C. David Ferris, Assistant Professor of Musicology, was awarded the Berlin Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Berlin to complete research on Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach. James Dunham, Professor of Viola, premiered the Libby Larsen's Sonata for Viola and Piano, written for him. Pierre Jalbert, Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory, was awarded first prize in the BBC Masterprize International Competition for Composers. Honey Meconi, Associate Professor of Musicology, published "Fortuna Desperata: Thirty-Six Settings of an Italian Song", in the series Recent Researches in the Music of the Middle Ages and Early Renaissance. Anthony Brandt, Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory, composed original music for "Crucible of the Millennium", a 3-hour documentary broadcast nationally on PBS on New Year's Eve, 2001.

E. WIESS SCHOOL OF NATURAL SCIENCES: Mary Ellen Lane, Biochemistry, received a Basil O'Connor New Faculty Award from the March of Dimes. Andrew Barron, Chemistry, received the inaugural Norman Hackerman Award from the Robert A. Welch Foundation. Vicki Colvin and Rick Smalley, Chemistry, led the successful effort to bring a National Science Foundation Nanotechnoloy Science and Education Center to Rice -- the Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology. John Margrave, Chemistry, received the Chemical Pioneers Award of the American Institute of Chemists. Richard Gordon, Earth Science, will be the keynote speaker at this year's Crawford Prize Ceremony. John Anderson, Earth Science, was elected president of the Society of Sedimentary Research. Joan Strassman, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, was president of the International Union for the Study of Social Insects, North American Section. Brendan Hassett, Mathematics, received a National Science Foundation Career Award. Randy Hulet, Physics and Astronomy, received an honorary degree from the University of Utrecht and was mentioned prominently in the materials for this year's Nobel Prize in Physics. Jason Hafner, Physics and Astronomy, received the 2002 Beckman Young Investigator Award. Tom Killian, Physics and Astronomy, was selected as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. Barry Dunning, Physics and Astronomy, was elected Fellow in the Institute of Physics of the Royal Society. Richard Gordon, Earth Science, has just received the 2002 Arthur L. Day Medal of the Geological Society of America. This is the highest award of this organization.

G. SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES: Jim Faubion, Anthropology, published The Shadows and Lights of Waco: Millennialism Today (Princeton Press) and edited The Ethics of Kinship: Ethnographic Inquiries. He also published articles in the International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Encyclopedia Britannica, and the Handbook of Anthropology. Herve Moulin, Economics, published "Scheduling with Opting Out: Improving Upon Random Priority," in Operations Research and "Normative Microeconomics and the Social Contract," Third Taesung Kim Memorial Lecture, Seoul National University. He has several forthcoming articles and has presented several papers at conferences. He is Editor-in-Chief with Mathematical Social Sciences and Associate Editor at 2 other journals. Earl Black, Political Science, published The Rise of Southern Republicans, with Harvard University Press (co-authored with Merle Black). Gina Branton, Political Science, was awarded a Congressional Research Grant from the Dirksen Congressional Center. Randi Martin, Psychology, was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and approved for a five-year one million dollar grant to study short-term memory. Robert Dipboye, Psychology, gave the invited keynote address at the fourth Biannual Australian Industrial and Organizational Psychology conference in Sydney. Michael Emerson, Sociology, received the 2001 Distinguished Book Award, Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, for Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion an the Problem of Race in America.

7. Recognition of Retiring Members of the Faculty - In ascending order of length of service, President Gillis acknowledged 10 retirees. Each will receive an inscribed captain's chair. Each retiree was asked to stand as their name was called.
