There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:17 am.

Respectfully submitted,

Joe W. Hightower, Secretary of the Faculty

NOTE FROM THE SECRETARY: Academic year 2000-2001 marks my last of a 3-year commitment to serve as Secretary of the Rice Faculty. My term will expire on June 30, 2001. At that time I shall also officially retire from the tenured faculty, although I hope to continue teaching on an as needed basis for a few more years.

The reason for this NOTE is to make an appeal for volunteers to fill the position as Secretary of the Faculty beginning July 1, 2001. I have enjoyed serving in this capacity which has given me a chance to meet wonderful colleagues from all facets of the University. Since the Secretary's primary job is to publicize and chronicle actions of the General Faculty, I strongly believe that the position should be held by a respected faculty member. It does take a fair bit of time, although it could probably be done more efficiently by a well-organized person. I will be happy to discuss the activities with anyone interested in volunteering for the position. The final selection of the Secretary will be made by the President upon recommendation by Faculty Council. Interested parties should make their desires known by contacting the Speaker of the Faculty Council, Bob Patten [x4031, x4697, or patten@rice.edu].
