Missed the orientation and training?  It’s ok, we still want you to get involved!  Here’s how: 1) Read “About Rice ESL Tutoring” to see with which of the 3 parts of ESL Tutoring you would like to participate-college groups, 1 on 1 tutoring, or English Corner.  2)  E-mail kkruger@rice.edu with your name, college, Spanish level, and whether you are interested in the college groups, 1 on 1 tutoring, or English Corner.  You will then be contacted about what you should do next.  3)  See “Resources” for training session handouts and other useful resources.

About Rice ESL Tutoring

The Rice ESL (English as a Second Language) Tutoring Program is a volunteer tutoring program under the RSVP volunteer organization of the Community Involvement Center.  With Rice ESL tutoring, members of the Rice University community help each other to improve their English speaking, reading, and writing skills. Learners are usually employees or international students at Rice who are attending ESL classes in an effort to improve their English abilities. ESL tutors are Rice students, faculty, staff, and other members of the Rice community who volunteer for about an hour per week. Being bilingual is not a requirement, and the program coordinators will provide training, so anyone can be a tutor!

College Groups:

In Spring 2006, ESL tutoring started new tutoring groups at the colleges for mostly beginner Housing & Dining staff learners. Tutoring in a group setting can be very fun for both tutors and learners. With multiple tutors, we hope to be able to tutor these learners multiple times per week to best meet their needs. So come join any of these groups; we would love to have you!

1 on 1 Tutoring:

While our greatest need currently is with the college groups, which will ideally end up as 1 on 1 tutoring, we understand that many people are not available at 1pm.  In 1 on 1 tutoring, each tutor is assigned a learner, and each individual pair sets the terms of the relationship. The match is mainly based on whether the learner would like a tutor fluent in a language other than English and on the schedules of the tutor and learner. The pair decides on the extent of tutoring needed, the time and location to meet, and the goals of the learner. Most pairs meet weekly. An online application is available for those who want to become tutors. If you would like an English tutor, you can fill out a learner intake form.

English Corner!

English Corner is led by Dan Stark. It meets 12pm weekly (lunch usually provided twice a month) in the graduate student lounge (across from Willy's downstairs in the student center. Native and international students and staff interact with fun discussions or presentations.
For questions contact Kenneth Hung (kwhung@rice.edu) or Dan Stark (daniel.j.stark@gmail.com).

There are 3 ways to become involved:

1) 1 on 1 tutoring or becoming a learner by us matching you. An online application is available for those who want to become tutors. If you would like an English tutor, you can fill out a learner intake form. You can read more at 1 on 1 tutoring.

2) College Group tutoring by helping Housing and Dining staff during their lunch in the college commons at 1:00 pm. See College Groups for how this works and who to contact to get involved.

3) English Corner, a weekly group meeting for fun discussions with native and international students and staff. See English Corner for more info.
