Areas of Research

Surface and Ground Water Hydrology: contaminant transport mechanisms in ground water; aquifer remediation strategies and modeling; geographical information and decision support systems; flood control and water quality strategies, and modeling. Most recently, Dr. Bedient's group has developed a Flood Alert System for the Texas Medical Center.

Bio

Dr. Bedient is the author or co-author of over 100 articles and five textbooks related to surface and groundwater hydrology and contaminant transport. Dr. Bedient's text with Wayne Huber, "Hydrology and Floodplain Analysis," is used in over 70 universities in the U.S. He has been continuously supported by federal research grants for the past 20 years at Rice University. He held the Shell Distinguished Chair in Environmental Science from 1988-1993 and has directed the development and application of the BIOPLUME II program for modeling aerobic biodegradation of organic contaminants in ground water. He has overseen the monitoring, modeling, and remediation studies at more than 20 hazardous waste sites nationwide, including United Creosote in Texas, Brio Superfund in Houston, the U.S. Coast Guard base at Traverse City, MI and three U.S. Air Force bases in Florida, Arizona, and Utah. He is currently working on a grant from the EPA entitled, "Design Manual for the Extraction of Contaminants from Unconsolidated Subsurface Environments," a grant sponsored by the City of Brownsville, Texas, entitled, "Resaca Water Quality Study," and a grant sponsored by the Texas Medical Center entitled, "Flood Prediction System for the Texas Medical Center." He has directed 40 research projects valued at over 9 million dollars since coming to Rice University in 1975.

Dr. Bedient teaches Hydrology and Watershed Analysis, and Ground Water Hydrology.
