Fellowships and Awards
- The Caroline S. and David L. Minter Prize for the top graduating English Major who demonstrates overall excellence in the study of British and American literature, language, and culture. Nominations are made by faculty in late spring. The recipient of the award is announced at the end of the academic year.
- The Caroline S. and David L. Minter Summer Scholar Program supports summer research and creative writing projects up to $3,000 per scholar. 4 scholars are selected each year on the intellectual and/or creative merit of their proposals and the feasibility of their successful completion. Although a valuable use of these grants might be to begin research for an undergraduate thesis in English, all majors are invited to apply who will return to Rice for their senior year in the Fall and who have completed English 200. Students who are currently seniors are not eligible to apply.
- The Lady Geddes Prize. The is an annual writing competition for the best academic paper by a currently enrolled freshman or sophomore. Any subject suitable to an interpretive approach is welcome. Manuscripts must be typewritten, signed with an assumed name, and accompanied by an envelope containing the author's real name, address, and email. Papers must not exceed 5000 words in length. Submissions are solicited in late spring, with the awards conferred at the end of the school year. First prize: $500. Second prize: $300.
- The Academy of American Poets Prize. This is an annual writing award given for the best poem by a currently enrolled Rice undergraduate student. Contestants may submit up to 5 poems. Each poem should have the author's name, address, and email on the top of the page. Submissions are solicited in late spring, with the awards conferred at the end of the school year. First prize: $100.
- The George Williams Prize in Fiction and Poetry. Submissions are solicited in late spring, with the awards conferred at the end of the school year.
- R2 (Rice Review Literary Journal) Prize for Best Artwork. The selected winner receives $500 and their work appears on the cover of the annually produced journal.
