Fall 2008
ENGL 400
Major Seminar: James Joyces Ulysses
Doody, Terrence
Wednesdays 1-4:00 pm

This course is open to junior and senior English majors who have completed English 200 and 300. We will read "Ulysses" in the context of Richard Ellmann's great biography of Joyce and with the aid of Stuart Gilbert's and Harry Blamires's guides to the text. Then we will reread it in the context of various critical and theoretical questions the book gives rise to and the secondary materials that try to answer these questions. There will be a long final research paper.
