Fall 2008 An introduction to the Victorian era in Britain (1837-1901). Readings will include a variety of articles and essays, some shorter fiction, poetry, travel writing, medical writing, and selections from letters and diaries. We will also look at visual forms such as cartoons, caricatures, illustrations, and advertisements. The course offers a panoramic view of an exciting and turbulent time with attention to such topics as sexuality and gender, science and religion, imperialism, class conflicts, and the practice of everyday life. We’ll use a new anthology, and a course packet; we’ll also explore the excellent online resources for Victorian studies. Assignments will stress individual research. Required Text:
