Fall 2008
ENGL 301 Creative Writing; Fiction
Instructor: Cambor, K.
Tuesdays 2:30-5:30 pm

This course will be an introduction to the writing of fiction.  Emphasis will be placed on understanding how short stories are crafted, with weekly writing assignments (during the first half of the semester) designed to help students become more proficient in creating sentences and paragraphs, developing character and  plot, describing setting, and managing issues of time in their short fiction.  We will also devote ourselves to the close reading of published stories by established writers which offer specific examples of how stories are structured.  Beside the weekly writing assignments, members of the class will be required to write two stories, one of which will be no fewer than twenty pages in length, and to complete a revision of the longer story following class discussion of it.

Among the writers whose work will be assigned for reading are:

William Trevor
Adam Hazlett
Joan Silber
Edward P. Jones
Ariel Dorfman
Deborah Eisenberg
Bharati Mukherjee
Mavis Gallant
Alice Munro
Haruki Murakami
