Dr.
Steven W. Lewis is Director of Asian Studies at
Rice University as well as Research Fellow and head
of the Transnational China Project at the James A. Baker
III Institute for Public Policy, where he oversees a
a research program examining the globalization of Chinese
culture. His research focuses on the development of
privatization experiments, energy policy and central-local
government fiscal relations in China and other transition
economies. Recent publications include examinations
of China’s oil diplomacy, the deregulation and privatization
of Brazil’s energy sector, and the development of the
LNG trade between Indonesia and Japan. Dr. Lewis has
also conducted studies on the privatization of Chinese
industry and government services for the National Bureau
of Asian Research, the Center for International Political
Economy, the UFJ Research Institute and Japan’s METI.
He received his doctorate in Political Science in 1996
from Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr.
Kenneth B. Medlock III is Visiting Professor of
Economics at Rice University and Senior Research Fellow
in Energy Studies at the James A. Baker III Institute
for Public Policy, where he is a principal in the development
of the Rice World Natural Gas Trade Model. He previously
was responsible for fundamental analysis of North American
natural gas, petroleum, and power markets at El Paso
Energy Corporation and served as the Lead Modeler on
the Modeling Sub-group for the National Petroleum Council
study of long term natural gas markets in North America..
From May 2000 to May 2001, he held the MD Anderson Fellowship
at the Baker Institute and successfully organized the
conference “Global Warming: Science and Policy.” Dr.
Medlock received a PhD in Economics from Rice University
in May 2000. His areas of specialization are in Energy
and Environmental Economics and Policy and Macroeconomic
Theory, with interest in Applied Econometrics and Applied
Microeconomics.
Dr.
Joseph Machado leads Technology Strategy and Innovation
for Shell Chemicals globally. He earned a PhD in Polymer
Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts
in Amherst in 1988, and joined Shell that year at the
Westhollow Technology Center in Houston as a researcher
in product development. Since then, he has held positions
in manufacturing, technology management, new business
development, and sustainable development in a number
of Shell Chemicals locations including Houston, New
Orleans, London, and Brussels.
