Our Speakers Biographies


Michael J. Economides is a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston and Editor-in-Chief of Energy Tribune magazine.

Among America's leading energy analysts, Mr. Economides has done technical and managerial work in more than 70 countries, has written or collaborated on about 200 articles and peer-reviewed papers and 11 textbooks, and has appeared as a guest on nationally distributed television and radio news programs.

An accomplished researcher, Mr. Economides has significantly improved understanding of the total hydrocarbon value chain, from reservoir to market. He has achieved major contributions on reservoir-stimulation theory, advanced reservoir exploitation strategies, and complex well designs. He is currently conducting industry research into development of deep offshore technology, world energy scenario forecasting, natural gas exploitation strategies, and a next-generation high-intensity offshore facility design engine.

Mr. Economides holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from Stanford University. He has been awarded honorary degrees and fellowships from prestigious educational institutions and professional organizations in Romania, Russia, and the U.S.

Terrance (Terri) Ivers has 30 years of extensive international project and business management experience in the global oil and gas sector.  He joined AMEC as President of Americas Oil & Gas in 2007 from Alliance Wood Group Engineering, where he served as chief operating officer. Previously, he worked for Kellogg Brown & Root for 27 years, where he rose to the role of corporate officer and vice president of offshore engineering, responsible for the execution of global offshore engineering projects.

A native Houstonian, Terri received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering in 1980, and he serves today on the Engineering Leadership Board for the college. He is a registered professional engineer with the State of Texas. He is also very active within the local community, serving on a number of industry groups concerned with the sustainability of the energy industry, as well as the board of the Clay Road YMCA.  Terri is a native Houstonian, married to Mary for 29 years, and the very proud father of four adult children.

As senior vice president and chief procurement officer, Jim Scotti has responsibility for over $10 billion in annual spend and more than 1500 resources in procurement, contract management, material management, sourcing, travel services, logistics and export control across all Fluor business groups worldwide.

Since joining Fluor in 2002, he has led the transition from a traditional decentralized procurement function to a center-led global organization that emphasizes global sourcing and leverages Fluor’s company and project spend. This includes advanced methods of strategic supplier integration with Fluor’s engineering disciplines, the development of strategic supplier partnerships and ongoing material market analysis.

During his tenure at Fluor, he also led the development of a Fluor endowed master’s degree program at Clemson University in Supply Chain and Logistics of Capital Projects, a first of its kind supply chain degree that is uniquely focused on the capital project business.

Prior to joining Fluor, Jim was Vice President of Procurement for Halliburton Company.

Mr. Scotti holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Trine University in Indiana and successfully completed the Advanced Management Institute Program at Rice University. He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.), a member of the Institute of Supply Management (ISM), past president of the Houston Minority Business Council Board of Directors, the Purchasing Roundtable, the Procurement Execution Group and current Chairman of the Board of Trustees for CAPS Research. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Construction Industry Institute (CII) where he received the 2006 Richard L. Tucker Leadership and Service Award for his contributions to the CII and the industry.

William P. "Bill" Utt was named President and Chief Executive Officer of KBR, effective March 15, 2006. He was named Chairman in April 2007. KBR is a global engineering, construction and services company supporting the energy, hydrocarbon, government services, minerals, civil infrastructure, power and industrial markets.

Previously, Mr. Utt was President and CEO of SUEZ Energy North America with responsibility for the LNG, retail energy, energy marketing and trading, power generation and development businesses. From 1995-2000, he was president and CEO of Tractebel's North American energy businesses. From 1984 to 1995, he held senior management and executive positions with CRSS, Inc.

Mr. Utt holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Virginia and has a master's degree in business administration from The Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia.

Mr. Utt serves on the National Petroleum Council, which provides advice and analysis to the U.S. Secretary of Energy. He has been chairman of the Electric Power Supply Association, as well as holding other leadership positions with that organization. He has co-authored numerous industry-related publications and has been a panelist at various academic and industry conferences and symposiums on energy-related issues. Mr. Utt is currently a trustee for the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia.

Mark Williams - Mark T. Williams is a nationally recognized risk management expert in the field of banking. Since 2002 Mark has been on the Finance and Economics faculty at Boston University where he teaches courses in risk management, economic activity and capital markets. He holds the academic rank of Executive-in-Residence/Master Lecturer. He also consults with major banking institutions.

As an author, Mark's latest book is "Uncontolled Risk", an explanation of the origins of the financial crisis to reduce the chance of such an event occurring again. To learn more visit: http://www.uncontrolledrisk.com/ .

Prior to Boston University, Mark held positions in banking, as a Federal Reserve Bank examiner and as a senior executive for a major trading company. Frequently he is asked by media to provide thought leadership on financial risk management related matters.

Since 1997, Mark has resided with his wife and two daughters in Newton, Massachusetts. He is an avid bike rider, and commutes to Boston University from his home year round.
