Social Sciences Research Institute Grants Guidelines

Deadline	Description
December 3, 2007	Seed Money Grants - Up to $12,000 in funding to develop a proposal for a major grant to an outside funding agency. The outside grant must be submitted within one semester of spending the internal funds. An applicant submits a 3-page proposal which outlines the project, its importance to the field, and the external funding agency. A budget and justification sheet is also required; funds may not be used to support the faculty member’s salary. Three awards will be made per year.
December 3, 2007	Research Professorships - One semester of release time from teaching duties to conduct research. All full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, regardless of their current teaching loads or other release-time opportunities, are eligible to apply. Awards may be contingent on resource and teaching needs in the applicant’s departments. The awards are designed to permit faculty to work on major innovative research. Inter-disciplinary work is encouraged, but not required. Faculty at all ranks are eligible, although untenured faculty must have proceeded through their first contract renewal before they are eligible (i.e., in their fourth year). It is expected that the release time will occur in the semester during which the faculty member teaches only one course. There will be three such awards: one for untenured faculty, one for tenured faculty, and one for either. Award winners may not reapply for five academic years.
Requests can be made throughout the year; availability of funds may be limited	Mini-Grants - Up to $1500 in funding for the purchase of research-related software, graduate or undergraduate research assistant time, hardware, or travel. Conference travel is not permitted. A one-page proposal must demonstrate that the faculty member’s research account or other available support cannot cover the specific purchase. If the faculty member has untapped research or other funds that can cover the purchase, s/he is ineligible for the award.
