Ad Hoc Curriculum Review Committee

• November 4, 1998: A second vote by faculty on Amended University-Wide Requirements andLanguage Competency Requirements was held. The faculty voted down the University Requirements and approved the Language Competency Requirements. A motion to form a committee was tabled. The University Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Council are discussing various measures that might be taken. This is likely to be a subject of discussion at the January 26th faculty meeting.

The Faculty Council and President Malcolm Gillis have charged this committee to develop a program of general education at Rice. In a letter to the committee they stated that: "This program is supposed to be of the highest possible quality, responsive to the needs and capabilities of our very strong students. The curriculum should allow our students to develop a deep appreciation for the rich legacy of human knowledge and experience and should impart to them the art and science of intellectual inquiry. We must fashion a curriculum that best prepares our students to live, work, and continue to learn as they meet the challenges of the next century."
