Greene Prize

The Greene Prize was established by Frances & Julian Greene, both Rice alumni from the 1960s, in support of the efforts of their son, David (Class of 1993), who organized the first Rice Environmental Conference in that year.

  Aaron Redman. “ Building a sustainable future here and now: discovering ways to reduce the environmental impact of Jones College”. Report on a study he did as a Janus Project.

  2nd Prize
  Aaliya Yaqub (Jr; English/Biology; Martel). “ Implications of Water Contamination: a critical look”. This case study of water contamination issues in California reviews the history of water quality protection in CA, her home state, and on that basis argues strongly for increased action by citizens in demanding information and in promoting necessary change.

  3rd Prize
  David Nowak: (Jr; Jones; econ/envi). “ Driving the Winnebago towards Tourism” This essay draws upon views of his two favorite environmental writers, Aldo Leopold and Ed Abby, to construct an argument in favor of ‘industrial tourism.’
