ABET Accreditation

The program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering (B.S.Ch.E.) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org). This degree requires a total of 132 credit hours.

The overall goal of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is to challenge our students to achieve their maximum potential in diverse professional careers throughout their lifetime.

Program Educational Objectives:

  1. Obtain the necessary knowledge in mathematics, basic sciences, computing, and engineering that will enable them to solve problems in the analysis, design, optimization, and control of components, systems, and processes encountered in the practice of chemical engineering;

  2. Exercise their competence, creativity and imagination in design and research, both as individuals and in teams, and apply their broad-based knowledge to synthesize solutions to realistic multidisciplinary engineering problems;

  3. Cultivate effective communication skills, both oral and written, especially in technical subject matters;

  4. Understand and appreciate the professional and ethical responsibilities entailed in engineering practice and research, and;

  5. Acquire a sufficiently broad, diverse, and rigorous education to excel in interdisciplinary industrial and graduate work in chemical engineering as well as in a variety of other professional degree programs.

Student Outcomes:

  1. Our graduates will be able to solve chemical engineering problems by applying knowledge of mathematics, science, and computing, and using analytical techniques, computer simulation, and modern engineering tools essential to chemical engineering practice.

  2. Our graduates will be able to design and conduct experiments, and analyze and interpret data.

  3. Our graduates will be able to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.

  4. Our graduates will be able to function effectively in team environments, including multidisciplinary projects.

  5. Our graduates will be able to communicate engineering and related concepts effectively in writing and orally.

  6. Our graduates will demonstrate understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.

  7. Our graduates will demonstrate understanding of contemporary, global, and societal issues encountered in engineering practices and the impact that engineering has on these issues.

  8. Our graduates will appreciate the need for and be able to engage in life-long learning.
