The Ann and Joe Hightower Award
The Ann and Joe Hightower Superior Award in Chemical Engineering
recognizes a top graduating student for outstanding academic scholarship
and service to the chemical engineering department. It is the highest
academic award given by the Rice
Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department.
The award carries a plaque and a
$3,000 prize. It
was endowed in 2002 through the generous contribution of Ann
and Joe Hightower.
Ann Hightower received a Masters degree from
our department in 1980. She spent her career at ExxonMobil Chemical
and led ExxonMobil’s
engineering recruiting at Rice for more than a decade.
Joe
Hightower joined the Rice Chemical Engineering
department in 1967 and is a well-recognized expert in catalysis.
He served
Rice as Department Chair from 1995-98 and was a member or
chair of our Undergraduate Committee for many years. Even after
his retirement in 2001, Prof. Hightower continues to serve the
department in many capacities
including
the supervision
of
his famous micro-catalytic reactor experiment.
