GRADUATE STUDENT NEWS

  • Outstanding Teaching Assistants 2006-2007: Michail Stamatakis, Fransisco Vargas and Sergio Iadevaia have been recognized as Outstanding Teaching Assistants for 2006-07 in CHBE301/303, CHBE412 and CHBE 470 respectively. The outstanding teaching assistants are selected every year by the undergraduate students attending our core courses.

  • The Spring 2007 Graduate Student Poster Contest winners are Vivek Anand, Gaurav Bhatnagar and Jie Yu. The winners of this award are chosen by the judges at the Annual Department Poster Day.
    • Vivek Anand won first place for his poster titled "Transvere Relaxation in Sandstones due to Internal Field Gradients".
    • Gaurav Bhatnagar's poster, "Accumulation of Gas Hydrates in Marine Sediments", put him at second place.
    • Jie Yu was awarded the third place prize for her poster "Synthesis of Near-Infrared-Absorbing Nanoparticle-Assembled Capsules."

  • Rajat Duggal is the winner of the 2006 Annual Graduate Thesis Award in Science and Engineering for the Rice/TMC Chapter of Sigma Xi. Rajat was presented this award at the 2006 Annual Awards and Member Induction Banquet on May 11, 2006.

  • Gaurav Bhatnagar Received First Prize 2006 SPE Student Paper Contest: Gaurav BhatnagarGaurav Bhatnagar, third year graduate student in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, has taken first prize honors in the 2006 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) - Gulf Coast Regional Student Paper Contest. The paper, Scaling of thermodynamic and transport properties for predicting methane hydrate distribution in marine sediments, describes Bhatnagar's work on geologic scale computer simulation to predict the accumulation and distribution of methane hydrates in marine sediments below the seafloor. Methane hydrates are a vast potential resource for natural gas. However, gas hydrates are not usually present insufficient concentration or sediment permeable enough to make recovery economical. Modeling the distribution of gas hydrates aids in recognizing the conditions that may make energy production economical. His research is supported by the Shell Center for Sustainability and the Energy and Environmental Systems Institute at Rice University. He will represent the Gulf Coast Region in the SPE International Student Paper Competition in San Antonio in September. More on this story...

  • Vinit Murthy Earns Top Texas Nano Honors: The Nanotechnology Foundation of Texas (NFT) has awarded Rice University doctoral student Vinit Murthy its 2006 George Kozmetsky Award for Outstanding Graduate Research in Nanotechnology. More on this story...

  • Shuqaing Gao has won the Ellis K. Fields Memorial Student Award.
