Sports

Home of the Reliant football stadium, Minute Maid baseball field, and the newly completed Toyota Center, Houston is chock-full of sports fans who root for beloved home teams. Professional teams include Texans football, Astros baseball, Rockets basketball, Comets women's basketball, and Aeros hockey.

Gulf Greyhound Park, between Houston and Galveston, features live greyhound racing six days a week. Just north of the city, the Sam Houston Race Park is Houston's thoroughbred racing site.

Parks

More than 300 municipal parks and 120 open spaces are at your disposal, providing venues for jogging, cycling, in-line skating, swimming, tennis, golf, baseball, and basketball, to name a few.

Just across Main Street from campus, Hermann Park offers more than 50 acres of picnic grounds, the Houston zoo, a golf course, and the Miller Outdoor Theater that presents free operas, plays, and concerts.

Memorial Park, a 15-minute drive away, is a very popular spot among runners. It has a three-mile jogging/walking path, much of which is shaded, and a network of dirt trails suitable for walking and mountain-biking. Memorial Park also has tennis courts, baseball facilities, and a golf course.

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is an urban nature sanctuary located on the western edge of Memorial Park. This 155-acre preserve encompasses nearly 10 percent of Memorial Park's total area. More than five miles of self-guided trails introduce visitors to a pine and mixed hardwood forest, a re-created Gulf Coast prairie, ponds and a native wildflower garden.

Attractions

A description of Houston would be incomplete without mentioning some of its amusements. Adjacent to the Astrodome, Six Flags Houston AstroWorld boasts many rides and other attractions, including 11 roller coasters and musical performances at the Southern Star Amphitheater. On the same acreage, WaterWorld rides provide relief from warm weather. One of the country's largest and most popular waterparks, Splashtown USA, is located just north of the city.

Houston is also home of the world's largest rodeo and livestock show, an annual event that attracts some of America's most popular country music performers.
