Technology Vision 2020:

A Call for Generating New Knowledge,

Strengthening Collaborations and

Improving Education

Implementing the Vision

In its final report, the Technology Vision 2020 task group outlined several steps the U.S. chemical industry must take in order to achieve its previously stated goals. The following steps are of particular importance to university researchers and educators:

  1. Generate and use new knowledge by supporting R&D focused on new chemical science and engineering technologies to develop more cost-efficient and higher performing products and processes.

  2. Capitalize on information technology by working with academic, federal and national laboratories, and software companies to ensure compatibility and to integrate computational tools used by the chemical industry.

  3. Develop partnerships for sharing information on automation techniques and advanced modeling.

  4. Create momentum for partnering by encouraging companies, government, and academe to leverage each sector's unique technical, management, and R&D capabilities to increase the competitive position of the chemical industry.

  5. Encourage educational improvements through the advancement of strong educational systems and by encouraging the academic community to foster interdisciplinary collaborative research and provide baccalaureate and vocational training through curricula that meet the changing demands of the industry.

These recommendations shaped the mission of the Center for Chemical Processing Technology (CCPT) and continue to guide our efforts.
