Dr. Ric Stoll
Events Data Project
This is a collaborative research project with Dr. Devika
Subramanian of Rice’s Computer Science Department.
One part of this project involves developing software to
extract events data from online news sources. Events data
contain the following information: the country that initiated
the event, the county that was the target of the event,
the type of event, and the date of the event. Here is an
example of an event: on March 23, 2007 Iranian forces seized
15 British sailors and marines. Iran is the actor, Britain
is the target, and the event type is seize. We will then
use events data to predict the outbreak of serious international
conflict (conflict involving the threat or actual use of
military force). We need research assistants to help create
the software.
Economic Tools Used by States
to Pursue Foreign Policy This is a project sponsored
by the Energy Forum of the James A. Baker III Institute
for Public Policy. My part of the project involves collecting
data on the use of economic tools (other than economic sanctions)
by states to pursue their foreign policy. For example, Russia
has recently taken a number actions regarding the supply
and/or price of natural gas. Most observers believe that
Russia has taken these actions to achieve political influence
over a number of its neighbors. I will need coders to collect
data on these actions so that they can be analyzed.
