Organometallic Compounds

Organometallic chemistry is an area of immense industrial importance as many of these compounds serve as precursors to advanced materials or as catalysts for technologically important processes such as hydrogenations, reductions, oxidations, addition reactions, polymerizations, etc. The goal is to create never-before-prepared compounds with interesting structures, physical properties and/or reactivities, and to publish these results in leading chemistry journals. The Century Scholar will learn to handle materials that may be air and/or moisture sensitive and to analyze them by modern spectroscopic methods. There is some flexibility; depending upon the student's specific interests, additional related projects are possible.
