Chemicals from renewable resources
Major advances have been made in developing molecular biology techniques for introducing
genetic control in cells. In this project, we will utilize these tools to manipulate and
engineer microbial cells such that they can produce useful chemicals from various
renewable carbon sources more efficiently.
Pathway and Metabolic Engineering
Recent rapid accumulation of massive amount of genomic and pathway information provides
a unique opportunity for the optimal design of metabolic pathways to achieve a specific
cellular behavior. However, new design approaches and tools need to be developed for the
efficient utilization of these genomic and pathway databases. This project will involve
both computer modeling and experimental investigation of the design and construction
of pathways using modern molecular biology techniques. This project also involves the
characterization and analysis of the resulting genetically engineered strains.
