About my project

I am working under the guidance of Dr. David Schneider, in the psychology department. Our goal is to see whether more prototypic members of groups show a more coherent organization of stereotype-relevant material. This will be assessed in terms of how closely stereotype-relevant material is clustered. We are in the process of doing an experiment concerning specifically the stereotypes about homosexuals and African-Americans. To do this we will get subjects and present them with an overview of each target (homosexual or black) which will include a photograph and a description. Then the subjects will be asked to answer some basic questions; then they will be given a sheet that asks them to judge how likely the person on the other page would be to perform the second behavior given that he performed the first.

About me

I am a freshman at Rice and a member of Brown College. I am from Houston, Texas, where I attended The Kinkaid School. I am grateful for my experiences there and the opportunity to have gone to such a good school. While there, I was very involved in athletics, visual art, and academics.

I am double majoring in managerial studies and sociology. I did not know what I wanted to do before a few years ago, after doing an internship in investment banking, with Morgan Stanley. In addition to a few other business-related internships I had the opportunity to do in high school, this experience helped me see my interest in finance and business in general. I plan to do an internship this summer with Morgan Stanley again. After I graduate, I hope to work for a few years before going on to business school.

I enjoy volunteering with the Hope for Youth program, where I tutor inner city children. It’s a great opportunity to relate to the students, offer mentorship, and give them the attention and help they do not necessarily get to receive at home. I also work for the Houston Scholar Program, where I supervise and mentor high school students after school three times a week, for about three hours each day. I also enjoy just relaxing when I have the chance, because there is not very much free time given my class schedule and activities. I like to play basketball, work out, spend time with friends, meet new people, and catch up on sleep.

About Century Scholars

The Century Scholars Program helped influence me to choose Rice for my undergraduate education. The opportunity to work closely with a professor/mentor on a research subject that interested me really stood out as a great chance to challenge myself and take advantage of what is offered here at Rice. After coming to Rice, the program has given me an opportunity to meet other students, through program activities and meetings. It has also challenged me to think and see things from different perspectives.
