Faheem Ahmed

About my project

I am working under the tutelage of Dr. Tony Ro, who is an associate professor of the Department of Psychology, in the field of cognitive neuroscience. I am currently working on a project elucidating the relationship between visual perception and tactile stimulation. Two electrodes are placed on the ring fingers of the left hand and right hand to deliver a tiny shock. Meanwhile, the subject is facing a television monitor with either an image of either their left hand or right hand on the screen, with scrambled images serving as the control. They must then determine which hand the shock is being delivered to. The purpose of this experiment is to determine whether visual perception has an effect on how they feel the tactile stimulus and if so, where in the brain this occurs. This research may lead to groundbreaking treatments of neural disorders that result in blindness in order to regain vision.

About me

My name is Faheem Ahmed, a resident of Springfield, VA, and I am the youngest child of a first generation Bengali-American family. My parents were born in Bangladesh and emigrated to the United States over 20 years ago. I have two older brothers who are both studying in the field of medicine: Nafis is 22 years old and Rizwan just recently turned 27 years old. Because of their influence and my strong passion for the sciences, I have planned to follow in their footsteps and pursue a career as a physician. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to be accepted into the prestigious Rice-Baylor combined medical program, with guaranteed admission to Baylor College of Medicine, one of the best in the world.

Due to the flexibility of this program, I have the luxury of pursuing other academic interests and I plan to major in either philosophy or psychology. In my free time, I play intramural sports such as flag football, basketball, and I am on the Rice Ultimate Frisbee team. I am also a dance choreographer for the South Asian Society, act in theatrical plays in the Rice Players, and served as the Freshmen Representative for Baker College. I hope to form a band by the end of the year in which I would play acoustic guitar and perhaps the cowbell.

About Century Scholars

The Century Scholars Program was a huge role in determining to attend Rice University. It not only provides undergrads with the invaluable opportunity of working with prestigious professors, but also allows them to conduct hands-on research in the academic field of their personal interests. I have had a wonderful time in this program and hope to continue conducting valuable research under Dr. Ro.
