Dr. Reginald Dufour
Astronomical Observations with a Computerized Telescope
The student will use the computerized 16inch telescope
at the campus
observatory to make observations of stars that will be used
to develop a
pointing model for improving the pointing accuracy of a
Meade LX200 16inch
telescope. In this process, the student will learn how to
use astronomical
skymap programs such as THE SKY to find stars, nebulae,
and galaxies
available for study at one's location and time of the year.
In addition,
they will have the opportunity to test and quantify the
use of various TV
imaging systems for observations by students in Rice laboratories
and assist
with public viewing nights at the observatory. Prospective
students should
have some working knowledge of astronomy and the constellations,
and any
experience using small (amateur) telescopes would be a big
plus in the
beginning of the project.
