Safety Rules

Chemistry Laboratory

 

  1. Never work in the laboratory without an instructor present to supervise.
  2. Do not perform any unauthorized experiments.
  3. Know the locations of safety showers and eyewashes. Be aware of potential hazards in the experimental procedures.
  4. Wear eye protection in the laboratory at all times. You may wear safety glasses, or prescription eyeglasses plus plastic side shields, or prescription eyeglasses plus safety glasses. Goggles must be worn over contact lenses.
  5. Horseplay, pranks or other acts of mischief are especially dangerous and are prohibited.
  6. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the laboratory. Be careful not to ingest any chemicals.
  7. To protect your skin from chemical spills, you must wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals), and a protective apron or laboratory coat over short pants or short skirts.
  8. Confine long hair and loose clothing in the laboratory.
  9. Keep samples that give off noxious vapors under the fume hoods at all times. Avoid breathing any chemical fumes.
  10. Never use mouth suction when filling pipets. Use a rubber suction bulb instead.
  11. Be very careful when inserting glass tubing into rubber stoppers. Lubricate the tubing and protect your hands with a towel.
  12. Always wash face, hands and arms with soap and water before leaving the laboratory.
  13. No chemicals or equipment may be removed from the laboratory without the specific permission and supervision of the instructor.
  14. Carefully dispose of sharp objects, including all broken glass, in the special "Glass" containers.
  15. Report any chemical spill to your instructor, who will either clean it up or advise you on a safe clean-up procedure.
  16. Report all accidents to your instructor.
