Rice University
Colleges Against Cancer

In 2005-2006 we had many successful events. In October, we supported Breast Cancer Awareness month by hosting an information table in the RMC. In November, we hosted a well-attended information table for the Great American Smoke out.

Also in November, we held a Special Dinner Event, which featured Dr. Woods from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. We served food from Croissant Brioche, Hungry’s and Thai Village.

We kicked off January with a Relay For Life promotion to raise awareness on campus about Relay For Life.  Four teams from Rice participated in Relay For Life. Everyone had a great time and we hope to increase the Rice community participation next year!

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

In March we promoted sun safety on campus. We put up posters to remind people to wear sunscreen. We are also promoting a smoke-free Houston campaign.

In 2006-2007 we hope to make an even larger impact on campus. We hope to participate and volunteer at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

We hope to foster our relationships with M.D. Anderson and help students find opportunities available to them.

We will continue to support Relay For Life and hope to increase participation for the 2007 Relay.
