Lots of "corpsing" (film term for laughter in the middle of a scene on the set) tonight...probably because we were all a little punchy and working on the last and most difficult scene of the play -- the infamous statue scene. Everything, it seemed, ended up being a source of humor: the height difference between Peter and Amy, the way actors not involved in the scene had a way of getting stashed off in the corner, and of course Shakespeare's need to tie everything up by pairing everyone off.
Director to Camillo, on the bit where Leontes sets him up with Paulina: "Don't look so smug!"
Despite all the giggles, we managed to get the scene blocked out, and it was really very beautiful. I was particularly pleased with the moment where Hemione steps off the pedestal and goes to meet Leontes. If we can pull it off as well in performance, I think the entire audience will be holding their breath.
