Molecular O₂ oxygen has two low-lying excited states.
The O₂ excited-state photophysics can be studied by detection of the following signals:

• NIR oxygen phosphorescence at ~1.27 mm
• IR fluorescence at ~1.93  mm (the first direct kinetic observation in solution is shown)
• transient NIR absorption in the lowest O₂ excited state (the first detection)
