Service & Mission Trips

As a group, we commit to two service projects each semester including RSVP's seasonal events and volunteer at the Way Station  (a Palmer ministry that feeds a warm breakfast to approx. 250 disadvantaged Houstonians every weekday morning) every Wednesday from 7am-9:30am (but people leave for class as they need to).   Our community is very glad to have the opportunities we do to share God's love with all sorts of people, but, of course, a picture is worth 1,000 words!

Way Station

The Way Station is one of our major service ministries constituting approximately  10 "person"-hours per week.  Some members come almost every Wednesday while others prefer once or twice a month.  Either way, it's a great experience and amazing way to touch a life.  (Note that there aren't a lot of pictures because it was sort of awkward to take pictures and protect the anonymity of those receiving aid at the Way Station.)

Puppets for the Place

This is one of our signature events.  Bo's Place is a non-profit grief support center in the Texas Medical Center that counsels children who have lost a loved one.  They use puppets in their counseling with the kids and needed some new ones.  So!  We gathered the creative juices of the Rice Community, provided free Thai Spice, and all the puppet-making supplies one could ever hope for.  The results were once again tremendous!

Spring Fling

This was part of RSVP's (Rice Student Volunteer Program) spring event.  We held an egg race in which contestants had to hold an egg in a spoon and run around the pole...except...the spoon handle had to be in their mouths....that made it a little more interesting.  The winner got to keep whatever was in the Easter egg!  Yum!

Project Pumpkin

Another RSVP (Rice Student Volunteer Program) event.  Canterbury helped the kids make ghost lollipops...Scary what some science majors will make!

Lieutenant's House

The Lieutenant's House is a temporary rehabilitation center for recently released convicts. Side by side with the residents, we give the entire house a new look.
