One film features nonviolent resistance to Milosevic's govt; another observes political prisoners in Indonesia. Also this week, the former president of Mexico is coming to Rice, and there is a panel on establishing an Ethnic Studies major. Tell your friends!

  • Always: Write letters!- new on the board are urgent actions about a dam project in India, forced labor in Burma, and abuse of a woman in Turkey.
  • Also on the board are the latest monthly publications. The Wire (international) and the Monthly Mailing (Amnesty USA). Check 'em out. Quite a number of released prisoners! See what other groups are doing!

    Crystal Landers of Global Partners will give a presentation on international family planning and the status of health for women and children in the world. Global Partners is the international public policy and service initiative of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The mission of Global Partners is to engage local Planned Parenthood affiliates and activists in a worldwide movement for sexual and reproductive health and rights.

    "Mexico: The Policy and Politics of Modernization", Presentation and Book Signing by His Excellency Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Former President of Mexico. Attendance will be limited to Rice Students, Faculty and Staff with reservations. This venue has limited seating on a first-come first-served basis. To make a reservation while seating is still available, please e-mail bipp@rice.edu with your name and phone number. In your request please specify if you are a student, staff or faculty member. The Rice bookstore will have copies of his book on sale before & after the event in Baker Hall.

  5. Anthropology film Festival on campus all weekend (free admission):
    2001 Margaret Mead Traveling Film and Video Festival Rice Cinema and the Houston Chapter of the United Nations Association are proud to present this year's festival, comprised of six programs highlighting issues ranging from women's healthcare to non-violent protest, with a special sidebar featuring selections from the Jakarta International Film Festival. Generous financial support of this program has been provided through the Jerome Segal Endowment, allowing Rice Cinema to offer free admission to all college students presenting a valid school I.D.
  6. Saturday: Meeting to continue planning Houston Participation in the April 20 national march and rally for peace in Washington DC. A chartered bus is a real possibility.
