THOMAS HONG was born in In chun, Korea. In 1978, his family immigrated to the United States and made their residence in Philadelphia. He began his musical training at the age of 15 on the piano and continued his musical studies at Philadelphia Biblical University, studying with Dr. Samuel Hsu. Later, he went on to earn a master degree in choral conducting at Temple University and an artist diploma in orchestral conducting from The Curtis Institute of Music where he studied with Otto-Werner Mueller.
Presently, Thomas is co-conductor of the Campanile Orchestra at Rice University. For the past four years, he was visiting assistant professor of music at Haverford College, where he conducted the orchestra as well as other choral ensembles. Other previous appointments include music director of Delaware County Youth Orchestra and assistant conductor of The Curtis Opera Theatre, North Penn Symphony Orchestra and New York Youth Symphony, as well as First Korean Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, where he served as organist and choir director for many years.
Mr. Hong has conducted many of the finest collegiate orchestras in the east coast including The Curtis Symphony Orchestra, The Juilliard Symphony, Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra and Mannes Chamber Orchestra. In addition, he has also conducted the Spokane Symphony (U.S. debut), Indiana Chamber Ensemble as well as being a frequent guest conductor with Orchestra Society of Philadelphia. Previously, he was invited by the Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association to be the guest conductor of their Regional Festival Orchestra. He made his Kimmel Center debut during the summer of 2003 with the ensemble from Strings International Music Festival, in collaboration with Philadelphia Orchestra's Mozart Festival, and was subsequently re-engaged to conduct several other performances there this past summer.
Recently, he participated in a masterclass in New York with Maestro Kurt Masur and shared the podium with him in a performance of Tchaikovsky Symphony no.
6. Subsequently, he was invited to audition for Maestro Masur in Paris with the Orchestre National de France and also participated in another masterclass in Wroclaw, Poland, resulting in his European debut with the Lutoslawski Philharmonic. Currently, he is pursuing conducting studies with Maestro Larry Rachleff at the Shepherd School of Music. |
