The preparatory division of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University offers non-credit private instruction in piano, organ, voice, brass, string, and woodwind instruments for children ages 6-18.
Chamber music groups, group theory instruction, and classes for the young child are also available. Virginia Nance, director of the preparatory program, has especially designed the theory curriculum for this program. Theory class sizes are limited to 12 students, and admission to all levels above primary 2, is by entrance exam only. Entrance exams are given at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
The Young Children's Division with a Dalcroze Eurhythmics-based concept is directed by Rachel Buchman and begins classes for children as early as age two continuing through age 8.
After filling out the waiting list form, applicants for music theory should phone the preparatory office to schedule an exam with Mrs. Nance. Summer is usually a good time to study theory privately, since theory classes are offered only in the fall and spring. Placement in a chamber music group is done through an audition at the beginning of the semester. Students participating in these groups must have attained a certain level of proficiency.
