Illness and Health
Do you need to see a doctor?
Symptoms
The most common health ailments for college students are not life threatening. A common cold, skin irritation, allergies, and minor sprains or strains are usually treated as effectively and quickly by the student. While it is important to seek medical advice or attention when necessary, it is also smart to evaluate your condition prior to rushing to Health Services or the emergency room. Use common sense to determine when a situation is a medical emergency, and then seek attention immediately. For on-campus emergencies call EMS at 713-348-6000 (or x6000).

Good Health Habits
Practice good health habits to prevent seasonal illness from viruses!
- Clean your hands often! Use soap and water or an antibacterial hand sanitizer. Handwashing is the easiest way to prevent illness!
- Stay hydrated. Aim to drink 8 glasses of water every day.
- Get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation taxes your immune system and makes you more susceptible to viruses.
- Exercise! 30 minutes every day will help boost your immune system.
- Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily to meet your body's vitamin requirements.

- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
