Research

Broadly speaking, faculty and postdoctoral fellows in the Department of Sociology at Rice University investigate the causes and consequence of social inequality. Although we research a variety of topics relating to stratification, a major focus is racial and ethnic stratification.

Specific projects now underway examine how the processes of health and migration unfold over the life course for Mexicans on both sides of the border; racial and ethnic differences in the influence of family structure on school grades; minority voting rights; patterns and trends in attitudes and opinions of Houston residents (houstonareasurvey.org); book clubs and the uses of reading for women; and drug abuse and drug policy.
