The Department of Sociology at Rice University currently consists of eight full-time faculty, one adjunct faculty, three emeritus faculty, four postdoctoral fellows, and a sizeable number of undergraduate majors. A major research focus of the department is racial and ethnic stratification in relation to issues ranging from health, education, and religion, to teen pregnancy and political involvement. Our major areas of study include migration, medical sociology, culture and women's activism, family, environmental concerns, religion, and political sociology.

The Sociology Department has taught more than 12,000 students over the years and about 600 of them have majored in the discipline.The faculty takes pride in the teaching reputation of the department, and most of the faculty have won major teaching awards.
