There is a mail list for this course (psyc101-l). Mail lists facilitate exchange of e-mail messages among people subscribed to the list. When you send a message to the list it automatically goes to all subscribed members. Any subscriber (in this case students in the class and the instructional staff) can send messages to the list, so that in principle it could be used as a means of on-line discussion of course material. In practice the main use of the psyc101-l mail list will probably be for the instructor or teaching assistants to send messages to students in the course. So, for example, you might be notified of emergency cancellation of classes or review sections, solutions to various course related problems, changes in reading assignments, and the like. More often I will use the list to notify students of relevant on-line material I come across, to direct interested students to material which speaks to issues that have arisen in class, or to correct or amplify unclarities in lecture or reading material. If, as the course develops, issues arise that could benefit from on-line discussion among students, we can use the mail list for that as well.
Subscription to the list is not automatic. You must subscribe yourselves. This is easy to do, but you must do it. You can do this by going to the mailman site You have to fill in a brief form and give yourself a password. If you have trouble doing this, let me know (sch@rice.edu), and I'll subscribe you.
Once you have subscribed you can send a message to the list using the address psyc101-l@mailman.rice.edu (note that the last letter in the address is not a 1 [one] but a lower case L [l]). It's just like sending any e-mail message except that it goes to all subscribed members. Two important points to keep in mind.
Finally, I will unsubscribe everyone from the list at the end of the semester. If you wish to unsubscribe yourself before that time go to the mailman site and fill out the relevant information. If you drop the course, it is a good idea to do this since you probably do not want to read all the traffic connected with the course.
