The Rice School Science Department

The lessons included here are intended for use by science students and teachers. Most of the lessons are hands-on with some written application of the concepts learned. Teachers or students may  use the lessons, because some are self-directed for students, and some are written so that teachers can prepare and present them in science class. Some require extensive science equipment, but many are designed to use every day objects. Enjoy the lessons and improve what is presented here by adding your own ideas!

"Lost in Space" Adventures in Astronomy These pages will provide a tour of our galaxy and solar system, examining theories concerning their origin. We will discuss and evaulate the theories and find facts which contribute to our understandings of who we are and how we got here!!

"Down to Earth"Geology After seeing the "unseeable" in our investigations of the atom, examining the elements and periodic law, and studying about theories concerning the origin of our universe, we will investigate how another branch of science-geology-gives us information about how our planet came to be as we see it now. Geologists have had much direct experience with the Earth's surface but there are still portions of the land surface and much of the undersea area that remain unexplored. Still, they have a good idea of what is inside, based on what they can see. There have been many models of the Earth, starting with the idea that the Earth was a flat disk , to the belief that it was a hollow sphere, to the plate tectonics model. Here we will investigate plate tectonics, its explanations of the past, and its predictions for the future of Earth.

Get Ready for Science Fair 1997-1998

These pages will guide students through the process of selecting a topic, completing research, and carrying out their project to completion. Dates for the Houston Science and Engineering Fair will be posted, along with any bulletins, calendars, or other information needed to be successful. Links are provided to other valuable sites which can serve as guides while working on the project. We are now beginning to plan for Science Fair 1998 at The Rice School. Information will be added and updated as it is received.

Introduction to Chemistry These pages are designed for students to access at the direction of their teacher. Students will access a page and use provided links to complete an assignment. The hands-on portions may be downloaded or printed in order for students to complete the assignments. Contents include the history of the periodic table and atomic theory, basic structure of the periodic table, elements and compounds, reactions and equations, solutions etc. Lessons are being added "periodically".

The Great Chemistry Challenge Use links to internet sites to work puzzles, find "factoids", solve problems, and look up chemistry trivia.Use information from the links to complete research about same everyday application of chemistry.

The World of Motion: Physics Activities These pages are designed for students to access in order to reinforce classroom lessons about the laws of motion, methods of motion, simple machines and work, and why things in our physical world move as they do. Students may access a page and use provided links in order to complete an assignment. The hands-on lessons may be downloaded or printed in order for students to complete them.

Energy: An Agent of Change These lessons were developed to teach energy transformations and exchanges. Included
are labs, mini-labs, research lessons with links, as well as a culminating project.

"Insect- Mania" Here are lessons and links which have been collected instead of created. I love insects, especially ants....as you can see.....and constantly collect ideas for teaching and researching about them. Enjoy!

Lessons from the Bay These lessons were written to accompany a study of oceanography or bay ecology. There are long and short term projects, labs, skill applications, and interdisciplinary ideas along with helpful links. New ideas are being added monthly.

{short description of image}The Incredible Human Body! We do not often stop to think about the beauty and complexity of the human body. Each individual cell is full of essential information , and the tissues, organs, and systems created by these powerful cells are even more amazing in design. To understand the human body, we must look at each of these parts seperately and understand them. These lessons are designed to give students a basic knowledge and understanding of basic human biology.
