We love to get our dance on at Rice, but sometimes we want to get out and mingle with the other salseros and salseras in Houston. Make sure that you're on the mailing list if you would like to know when we're all going out together. Also, if you're going out and want to invite other salseros from Rice, send us an email (salseros@rice.edu) and we'll send it out to the entire list. Here's a good guide for where to go out salsa dancing in Houston. Our ratings are only valid for that particular night of the week.

Review: Tropicana has a pretty good dance floor and it's pretty large. If you don't go early, it will be pretty crowded. The crowd is pretty friendly, but it's best to go with a friend or a group if you want to dance all night. They play live music, but there's a bit too much merengue. Tuesday is the only night that offers easy parking. Going on Friday or Saturday, save yourself the headache and valet park.
Wednesday:
Elvia's
2727 Fondren @ Westheimer
8:00 - 2:00
Age? 18

Review: Elvia's is a restaurant. So if you go before 11PM, you can order food. Medium sized dance floor. The crowd is not terribly friendly. If you want to dance, bring a friend or a group. The default answer if you ask someone you don't know to dance is usually "NO". If you have nerves of steel, you'll eventually find someone who wants to dance with you. It's still a very fun place and usually has a live band. Expect a decent amount of Salsa on Wednesday. On Fridays and Saturdays, the salsa songs are few and far between.

Review: Live music, and very good music at that. Very friendly crowd. The only downside is that it's extremely crowded and there are a lot of random people drinking in the middle of the dance floor. If you go early or stay late, you'll have more room to dance. It's a restaurant, so go early and get your grub on.
Thursday:
Scott Gertner's Skybar
3400 Montrose @ Hawthorne
8:30 - 2:00
Age? 21 (very strict)
Cover? $10

Review: Skybar is a very classy, upscale venue. The salseros call Skybar "church" because it's the one place where you can expect to find the great dancers week after week. It is a great environment to dance and the crowd is a lot of fun. Go early if you want to have space on the dance floor. It gets very crowded and the line gets very long.

Review: Salsa lessons 8:00-9:00. Good dance floor. Live music on Fridays. It's very easy to find someone to dance with at Rumba Club. Saturdays are "International"... so expect a couple of salsa songs per hour.

Review: Casino Rueda class with K'yuko Dance Company 9:30 - 10:30. It's worth it to go just for the class, and then stay for free. The dance floor is concrete and rather small. Friendly crowd. Nice mix of salsa, merengue and bachata. After about 1:00AM, the mix swings more towards raggaeton and hip-hop with some salsa and merengue here and there.
