  • Uganda Village Project - 6 week summer service project
The Uganda Village Project is now accepting applications for 2005!
We are looking for volunteers for our 6-week summer program, as well as 6 and 12 month long-term volunteers to maintain a constant presence in Uganda and carry out more in-depth service projects!

The Uganda Village Project was created in an effort to improve the living conditions of the people of the Iganga District in Uganda through a sustainable public health and education partnership with Ugandan students, professionals, and charitable organizations.

UVP is a student-led organization that is part of the Village Projects Initiative of the International Federation of Medical Students Association-USA.

Last year our group of 31 included a Nurse Practitioner HIV/AIDS specialist, a Family Practice Physician, Physical Therapist, HIV/AIDS Clinical Pharmacologist, and grad and undergrad students in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, epidemiology, and anthropology.

More information, as well as applications, can be found at www.ifmsa-usa.org/UVP

In 2004, our team, in conjunction with 4 local Ugandan nonprofits and the Iganga Rotary Club, accomplished the following:

Teaching: UVP taught tens of thousands of Ugandans about HIV/AIDS Transmission/Prevention and on Sanitation/Nutrition. Through a "Train the Trainer" program, hundreds of Ugandan students and community leaders were prepared to teach about these subjects on a sustainable basis. Ugandan groups that were trained last year have already taught over 10,000 people about HIV/AIDS.

Well Construction: UVP supervised the creation of 4 wells. Bacterial testing supplies were purchased to ensure that these wells provide clean water to thousands.

Free Clinics: UVP created 6 temporary free clinics with the help of local interpreters, health professionals, and medical students. Over 1000 patients were treated, while over 400 received HIV testing and counseling. Hundreds of patients were also given eye exams and received free glasses, through a joint program with Unite for Sight. Volunteers also assisted a Ugandan nonprofit with providing home-based care for AIDS-related opportunistic infections.

Supply Distribution: Basic medical supplies and equipment were distributed to needy Ugandan clinics. Clothing donations were distributed to orphans in several villages.

Our goals for 2005 include, expanding and strengthening our education program, Train the Trainer program, free medical clinics, eye health project, well construction and water testing program, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, and medical supply and clothing distribution.
