Rice Linguistics Society

Who we are

Rice Linguistics Society (RLS) is a student-run organization at Rice University that publishes the Rice Working Papers series and organizes a biennial workshop on linguistics. Additionally, RLS hosts a poster session during the Biennial Rice Symposium on Linguistics (next occuring in spring 2010). And of course, RLS is closely connected to the linguistics department at Rice University. Membership is open to all (undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty of any department), whether or not you are affiliated with the department.

News

We are back with a Fall 2009 update:

Documentary: 'The Linguistics' + panel + reception

You are invited to a small FieldFest event put on by the Linguistics Department to raise awareness of disappearing languages, cultures and the importance of language documentation. As part of the UN Travelling Film Festival the 2008 documentary 'The Linguists' will be shown at 1pm, on November 8 (this Sunday) at the Rice Media Center. Following the movie, a panel of field linguists will reflect on fieldwork experiences. A reception will follow at 3pm.

Through generous grants from the GSA TG Fund and the Dean of Undergraduates office, we are able to offer subsidized tickets for this event. There are 60 FREE tickets available for graduate students, first come first served, available this week at the Information Desk in the RMC. Undergraduate tickets are being offered for $2 (please email vica (at) rice (dot) edu to reserve yours). General Rice Cinema ticket prices are $6.

Coming soon: RLS BBQ!

We are planning one of our famous RLS BBQ's for Friday, November 20 (that's the week right before Thanksgiving). Tentative start time at 5:00. Bring your friends and hunger to the Rice Linguistics lounge and patio for a good time.

In process: Rice Working Papers in Linguistics Vol. 2

Submissions have been received for our second volume of working papers and are under review. Please see our Working Papers page for more information.
