Membership Information

Updated for Fall 2008-Summer 2009

For the 2008-2009 academic year, all current Rice students, and benefits eligible faculty and staff are automatically considered members of the Recreation Center. A current Rice ID is all that is needed to use the Rec Center. Family members* (see asterik below rate table) of these individuals may also obtain a Rice ID (for $10 at RUPD) which allows them to use the facility. Alumni and their families are also able to use the facility but must purchase a Recreation Center membership.

Isgren Cardio Room

A limited number of memberships are also available to individuals with no affiliation to Rice University. The program provides such recreational activities as swimming, racquetball, badminton, handball, squash, tennis, basketball, volleyball, jogging, and use of the cardio, fitness and weight rooms.

Registration for the 2008-09 membership year begins August 18, 2008 and lasts through July 31, 2009 at 8:30 p.m.

Students, faculty and staff only need to bring their Rice ID to use the Rec Center. Applications for alumni and non-Rice memberships are available at the Rec Center Operations Desk. Completed applications will be accepted between 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Monday through Friday) in the Recreation Center office on the second floor. After submitting a completed application (with payment), alumni and community individuals will be given a receipt which they must take to the University Police Office to have their Rec Center membership cards made. Checks should be made payable to Rice University. Call (713) 348-4058 for further information.

Other Issues

Prior to purchasing a membership, please note that certain areas may not be available at all times and all schedules are subject to change without notice, i.e. for Orientation, Varsity Swimming Competitions, the Summer Youth Activity Program, etc. A complete schedule of operating hours, including reduced hours during holidays and academic recesses, is available online or at the Operations Desk. Check class and activity postings in the main lobby and throughout the building to avoid any conflicts and inconveniences.

All members MUST PRESENT either their Rice University or Recreation Center Member ID Card when using any of the Recreation Center's indoor and/or outdoor facilities. Use of the playing fields must be scheduled in advance and the applicable rental fee paid. It is necessary to have the ID card with you at all times as it MUST BE PRESENTED to check out any equipment. Your ID card is non-transferable. If an ID card is presented by anyone other than the owner whose name appears on the card, it will be picked up and all privileges revoked.

See our Membership Manual for more information regarding our policies.
