Words from Wei

My name is Wei Chen, a second year graduate student in the Physics & Astronomy Department at Rice, majored in Astronomy. I¡¯m running for the next President of RCSSC.

I¡¯m outgoing and easygoing. Having been at Rice for almost two years, I¡¯m familiar with and used to the life here and have pretty good ideas on how to make our graduate lives better and more interesting and have made a lot of friends here.

I¡¯m also responsible. I¡¯ve been working for RCSSC since last fall and did a pretty good job helping people out such as working on different kinds of events.

I¡¯m also experienced. I used to be the president of the USTC (University of Science & Technology of China) Student Volleyball Association, keeping the club on the right track and organizing a lot of events inside and outside the campus.

I¡¯m full of enthusiasm running for the President of RCSSC and will still be responsible and enthusiastic if elected. Besides organizing well the events celebrating the Chinese festivals, I¡¯ll keep RCSSC as active as it is or more and do a good or even better job serving the students here, Chinese or non Chinese and keep close contact with the local Chinese and non Chinese community.

Gao, Liang

Gao, Liang (Rice email: Liang.Gao)

I am a 3rd year graduate student in the department of Bioengineering. I graduated from Fudan University back in 2006. I am truly honored for being nominated as one of the candidates for the president of RCSSC. As a member of the Chinese community here at Rice, I have greatly benefited from the numerous help and support I have received over the years. I have been passing on the same kind of service to fresh Chinese graduate and undergraduate students who join the Rice community. Now I would like extend my service to the community by running for the much coveted position as the president of RCSSC. If elected, I aim to bring our organization closer to the greater Houston community. More social activities, field trips, and guest speakers on career after graduation are the places I want to improve. It will help us to better understand American political and cultural diversity, to improve our communication with people from all walks of life, and to formulate realistic professional plans. By creating more opportunities for our students to integrate more seamlessly into American life, I am confident we will reap great rewards in the future¡ªin life, in school, and at work.

Personal Information:
2006-2009 Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rice University
2002-2006 Special Class for the Gifted Young, University of Science and Technology of China

Previous RCSSC Experience:

  • Maintained the RCSSC webpage
  • Helped picking up and accommodating new students
  • Participated in preparing food and beverage for the celebrations of Mid-autumn and Chinese Lunar New Year
  • Presented Chinese culture during the Culture Fair organized by OISS

Motivation:
First of all, I would like to thank my friends who nominated me and encouraged me to accept the nomination. This was a scenario that I never imagined before. Frankly speaking, I was a little reluctant in the beginning. Breaking out of one's own comfort zone is never easy. It did take me some time to make up my mind. Whatever the result will be, it's a big step for me.

Ever since I was a newbie at Rice, I have received lots of help from the warm-hearted senior students. Just like the director Adria Baker of OISS said, they give a perfect footnote to the word hospitality. I feel very proud and lucky to be a member of the big family, and at the same time in debt to the community. Now it is good timing for us to stand up and repay them for the numerous kindnesses.

My experience of working for the committee of the Rice Chinese Students and Scholars Club has acquainted me with the operations of the club and important activities such as the new students picking up, orientation and our semiannual celebrations. With the help of our committee members and support from our community, I believe, together, we can make our lives a little bit easier.

As for the plans if elected (in case that happens), BBQ, strawberry picking, wild flower sighting and sport matches all sound great to me. Or maybe more prizes for the celebration parties? And I fully trust the wisdom of our community to come up with more ideas.

I feel that I am ready. So if you trust me, please vote for me. Thank you!
