They're For Real!
August 20, 2005 In 2004, the graduate students broke a multi-year losing streak with a surprising defeat of the faculty team. By repeating this year, they proved they are for real. They won the high scoring seven inning game, 15-13. Early on, the contest appeared to be shaping up as a classic defensive battle. Both teams went error free in the first inning and retired batters in successive order. In the second inning, however, the faculty broke the game open with four runs. The graduate students were not intimidated, however, and came back with an impressive inning of their own, scoring seven runs in the third. The game featured only one medical time out, and Greg Vonnahme was named MVP after scoring multiple home runs. Both teams recruited well in the off-season. Coach Wilson of the faculty team particularly praised the play of rookie Monika Nalepa, who studied the rules of softball for the first time in preparation for the game. Co-captains Goodman and Gonzalez of the graduate student team were pleased to have the contributions of Stephanie Burchard, Carlos Cuellar, and Andrew Speigelman, off season acquisitions who contributed solidly to the victorious effort. When asked for comment on the successive losses, Coach Wilson responded, "So they beat a bunch of old people! Big deal!" He was seen sighing and shaking his head as he left the interview. Below are pictures from the game. To see the full sized versions of the pictures, click on the thumbnail sketch. Thanks to everyone who participated, and mark your calendars for next year's battle!
