Research in the Rudgers and Whitney Labs focuses on the ecology and evolution of plants, insects, and fungi. Species interactions (particularly mutualism and herbivory), invasion biology, and the consequences of hybridization are major themes. Studies are currently being conducted in Texas savannas and forests, Indiana forests, Great Lakes dunes, and the Samoan archipelago.

Although our research programs are largely independent, we have combined our lab spaces and run joint lab meetings to capitalize on the intellectual wealth represented by a talented group of postdocs, grad students, associates, and undergraduates.
