"Single Cells and Cell Populations"
Abstract
Chemical & Cell cultures consist typically of many cells that differ in their properties. The heterogeneity of such cell populations provides a significant challenge for studying organisms because the average properties of cell cultures may not reflect what individual cells really do. The description of cell populations requires special theoretical tools as well as special experimental approaches that focus on the basic unit --- the single cell. This is particularly necessary for the accurate translation of genomic information into cell function. Efforts will be described on the development of new flow cytometry methodologies that together with novel bioinformatics tools offer a window of access to detailed information in single cells.
