RICE ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC MUSIC STUDIOS OVERVIEW

Our Main Room: State of the Art meets classic analog gear
Our main workstation is centered around a dual 2 GHz PPC G5, which runs Digidesign's ProTools HDII and Apple Logic Studio Pro.  The workstation is configured to mix anything from a standard mono or stereo track to a full 5.1 Surround Sound mix. Additional hardware includes a MOTU 828 for work with MAX/MSP (a graphical environment for music, audio, and multimedia) a Capybara 320 for Kyma work, and a Mackie 1604 mixer. Also included is a digital patchbay for all S/PDIF connections (coaxial and optical). Two networked MOTU MIDI TimePiece AVs allow users to easily interface with and control all the MIDI devices contained in the main room including the vintage MIDI gear.  On top of the desk you'll find a MIDI controller keyboard and a LCD monitor which can be placed in a variety of positions based on project needs.

Just to the left of the main desk is our pride and joy. This table and rack holds classic gear including an EML100, a new Custom Module made for us by Synthesizers.com, Moog MultiMoog, Oberheim OB-8, Roland U-220 and a Roland Planet-S MKS-30. To supplement this great collection, we've added a Rane rack mixer, a Symetrix Stereo Parametric EQ, and a Focusrite VoiceMaster Pro preamp.

The main room also houses the following media players: Tascam 32 Reel to Reel, Sony DAT, Philips realtime CD-R burner, and a Denon hybrid 5.1 DVD player (for playback of 5.1 mixes). Since this room is also used for class meetings, the space includes a whiteboard and a video feed from the LCD monitor to a portable projector.  The media players, computer, mixer, and patchbays are all mounted in portable rack cases, which can be moved to different locations in the school for concerts and other presentations.

ROOM B
The dedicated MultiMedia room is equipped with Final Cut Studio 2, a Mac Pro with two 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processors and two LCD monitors which makes it ideal for fast video and audio editing.

The room contains a Quadraphonic Alesis nearfield monitor setup, a Digidesign MBox and a PreSonus Firebox.  MIDI is connected through a MOTU MIDI TimePiece AV and can also be routed to the Proteus 2000 sound module.

ROOM C
This room is a stereo workstation, built around a dual 2 GHz Mac G5. Audio connections are made to the computer via a Digidesign MBox for use with ProTools and a PreSonus Firebox.  Sound can be monitored with either headphones or the Alesis nearfield monitors. An Evolution MK-449C keyboard, a MOTU Express XT and a Korg TR sound module are used for MIDI work. The studio also contains a DAT recorder and a tape recorder for transferring archived audio.

ROOM D
This room is analogous to ROOM C and also contains a dual 2 GHz Mac G5, Digidesign MBox, and a PreSonus Firebox.  Sound can be monitored with either headphones or the Alesis nearfield monitors. ROOM D has the same MIDI capabilities as ROOM C, but with an Ensoniq MR replacing the Korg TR.

OFFICE
Our Office hosts a server for the entire facility and all of our cables, tools, and repair parts. The office also holds our collection of portable audio gear. Students have access to a remote recording cart which contains a Titanium Powerbook G4, a Digi 02 audio interface, Roland speakers, a Rode NT-1 microphone, and two Earthworks SRO microphones.  For remote recordings, students may check out one of our two portable M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 recording systems or a Tascam portable DAT recorder.   Students can also check out headphones, several different microphones, and other recording accessories. There is also our "gig rig":  a portable rack case which houses a mixer, a splitter, CDplayer, an effects processor, and a quad amp for live performances of electronic media works.
