Embedded system development resources

Orbit-EDU (Rice IP required)

The educational version of the Orbit system, Orbit-EDU, developed by Rice Efficient Computing Group can be used as the starting point of the student projects. Student teams can use the board to test-drive and debug their designs and eventually customize/augment the Orbit board. Depending on the project, the team may have to prototype a new board based on the Orbit design.

More information on Orbit_EDU's webpage.

Embedded system development tools

   TI MSP430 microcontroller

MSP430F1612  and example code (very useful)
IAR Embedded Workbench (Installed on VLSI Lab computers)
A minimalist guide for starting with IAR Embedded Workbench

            MSP430 USB-Debug-Interface TI MSP-FET430UIF
The first time it is used by IAR EWB to program, it may prompt for firmware updating. Accept that.

   Electronic circuit design

A very nice tutorial (with lots of pictures)

   PCB design

EAGLE Layout Editor version 4.1 (Installed on VLSI Lab computers)

Mobile system development resources
Windows Mobile Smartphones phones

We have used many Windows Mobile devices. Some of them are as follows. Students will learn C++/C# Windows Mobile application development with Visual Studio 2005, especially socket-based Bluetooth interface, multi threading, and wireless interfaces.
