for Student Awards in Managerial Studies
John P. Hansen Award in Managerial
Studies
Each year, two juniors majoring in Managerial Studies
are chosen to receive the John P. Hansen Award in Managerial Studies.
Established in 2003, the $500 award is given to students who have
coupled excellent academic performance at Rice with outstanding
records of extracurricular achievement while enrolled at Rice. The
selection is made by a committee consisting of the director and
faculty advisors in the managerial studies program.
Juniors who have completed 60-89 credit hours
(by the end of Spring 2008) and have completed 4 of the 10 Managerial
Studies required courses are eligible to apply. To apply, students
must submit a completed Hansen
Award application form, a copy of their
resume, an unofficial transcript, and a personal statement
(not to exceed 200 words) expanding on the extracurricular
activities listed in the resume. Application packets are due
Friday, March 21, 2008.
Dr. John P. Hansen is the board secretary of
the Alief Independent School District's board of trustees. He received
his Ph.D. in economics from Rice in 1971, and his career has included
both academic and non-academic appointments. In addition to supporting
the John P. Hansen Award, Dr. Hansen has endowed a graduate student
fellowship in economics. Past recipients of the John P. Hansen Award
have been:
H. Russell Pitman Award in Managerial Studies
Each year, one or two graduating seniors majoring
in managerial studies are chosen to receive the H. Russell Pitman
Award in Managerial Studies. It is given to “an outstanding
student who has demonstrated leadership in activities on campus
as well as academic performance.” To apply, students must submit
a completed
Pitman
Award application form, a copy of their
resume, an unofficial transcript, one letter of recommendation
from a Professor or College Master, and a personal statement
(not to exceed 250 words) expanding on the leadership activities
listed in the resume. Application packets are due Friday, March
21, 2008.
Mr. Pitman, now retired, held a number of administrative
positions at the University, including that of campus business manager.
The award was established in 1984 and has been funded by grants
from his father, Morris R. Pitman. The award's cash value varies,
and it is determined by the income of the endowment fund for the
current fiscal year. The recipients are selected by a committee
of managerial studies advisors, chaired by the program director.
