RESEARCH

Master's Thesis: An Investigation of an Enigmatic Effect of Orienting Tasks on Memory - Manuscript in preparation

A series of experiments exploring our ability to overcome a processing "fix" caused by a levels of processing orienting task procedure by superimposing a selectivity task.

 

Bachelor's Dissertation: A Critical Empirical Analysis of the Theory of Reasoned Action (First Class)

An investgation into the link between human attitudes and behaviour. The study examines inconsistencies in the Theory of Reasoned Action and concludes with some original findings.

 

Undergraduate Research Project: Aspects of Levels of Processing and Memory Recall (First Class)

An experimental study testing the influence of depth of processing, intentional versus incidental learning, and positive versus negative responses on memory recall.

Fall 2001: Teaching Assistant for undergraduate Memory class. Designed and graded exams, graded research papers, assisted with student queries on course content and data analysis.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Current: Data Analyst - children's autism project

Management of Filemaker Pro 5 database, statistical analyses.

 

1999 - 2001: Assistant Policy Officer - Gateshead Council

Sociological research and social policy implementation and evaluation. Experience includes:

- Co-wrote a Performance Plan, outlining: the Council's performance in 2000-01, targets for improvement in 2001-02, how to achieve these goals, and a comparison with other ouncils. Involved data anaysis and presentation of results in an accessible format. The document was distributed to 88,000 households in Gateshead.

- Planning and development of a UK Government piolt project to integrate youth services.

- Social Exclusion audit and needs analysis to identify areas of deprivation, leading to the development of a strategy to tackle social exclusion.

- Preparation of progress reports on key issues for local political management.

 

1998 - 1999: Credit Control Agent - British Telecom

Analysis of accounts using a confidential database, authorisation of payment plans and debt management actions, customer service, and accurate data entry.

 

ADDITIONAL POSITIONS

Student Committee Member (elected)

Responsible for representing student views and organising numerus college events, e.g., Freshman induction activites, a "buddy" scheme, and AIDS awareness events.

 

College Welfare Officer (elected)

Individual casework with students and liaison with cousellors, psychiatrists, and pastoral staff, requiring a high degree of sensitivity and confidentiality.

 

Pregnancy Phoneline Volunteer

Provided advice and support to students. Completed a listening skills training course.
